Jon Metzler

Jon Metzler is a Senior Research Affiliate at BASC and Lecturer (Continuing) at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Jon’s research interests include regional clusters; the intersection of demographics and sharing economies; and network operation including 5G networks. Recent publications include Security Implications of 5G Networks, published with support from the UC-Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. Publications in progress include Japan’s longevity hubs for MIT AgeLab, and Applying lessons from 5G’s rollout in the US for the UC- Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. Jon also teaches at Waseda University in Japan on ICT Strategy in the US and Japan.

Jon is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and completed his MBA/MA-Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted research comparing innovation ecosystems and new venture formation in Silicon Valley and Japan. Prior to returning to UC-Berkeley, Jon founded Blue Field Strategies, a consulting firm helping infrastructure firms harness innovation. Jon was also Director at Rosum Corporation, a pioneering Silicon Valley location technology firm extending the reach of GPS indoors. Jon has new venture launch and investment experience in the US and Japan, and operational media experience in the US and Japan. Jon is a member of the board of directors for the Japan Society of Northern California and was a board chair from 2017 to 2020.
